South Korea is becoming the powerhouse of fighters in Asia. Announced today, Korean Top Team’s Lim “The Ace” HyunGyu is the latest prospect to be picked up by the UFC for a four-fight contract. His first bout is yet to be decided; it is still possible he may be on the UFC’s first card in Macau, China to be held this November 10th. *Updated 8/22: Lim will indeed fight on the Macau card against undefeated Brazilian Marcelo Guimaraes.
Lim joins teammates Jung “Korean Zombie” Chan Sung and Yang “The Ox” Dongi on the world stage following three straight years of wins, two of which were in the Pacific Xtreme Combat promotion based in Guam. He has not let any of those fights get out of the first round. At 187 cm and 88kg, Lim recently claimed the PXC Welterweight Championship by first round submission victory over Ryan Bigler. Prior to the PXC, he fought in M-1, DEEP and Heat Japan.
The Korean Zombie has high praises for his teammate, as quoted from this Bloody Elbow interview:
“There are a lot of talented fighters in Korea right now. If I had to choose one guy, I’d say it’s Hyun Gyu Lim. He’s another member of Korean Top Team who fights at welterweight. He’s really big and long, especially for a WW. He’s huge and really skilled all around. He’s probably the best all around fighter on our team, myself and Dongi Yang included! His fights are always exciting and he’s had 4 straight 1st-round KOs. Hopefully he’ll get the call from the UFC soon.”
As to once being called the rising star of KTT, Lim’s teammate The Ox also had high praises:
“No, I don’t think I’m a secret weapon,” Yang admitted. “The real secret weapon at Korean Top Team is Hyun Gyu Lim. He’s one of our welterweights and he’s really incredible. He’s huge for a welterweight and his all around game may be the best in all of Korean MMA right now. He recently beat Ross Ebanez at PXC in the Philippines and we’re hoping that he’ll be joining us in UFC soon.”
