Season one finale of Rich Franklin’s ONE Warrior Series took place on Saturday 31 March in Singapore and the winners are starting to emerge.
Last Saturday night was the finale of Rich Franklin’s ONE Warrior Series. MMA prospects who had impressed during the tryouts faced off in Singapore with a multi-fight contract on the line for the winners.
The three fighters to earn US$100k deals with ONE Championship were Rockie Bactol, Woonkyum Kim and Daesong Park. In addition JD Hardwick, Shahid Siddiqui and Faizan Khan all impressed enough to earn a bonus from the promotion.
Bactol (2-0) is a Bangkok-based Filipino and a veteran of two Full Metal Dojo fights who has previously competed at bantamweight. Kim came into the show with an 0-1 amateur record having yet to make his pro debut while Dae Song Park (6-2-1) was one of ROAD FC’s top lightweights.
Speaking after the behind closed doors event Rich Franklin admitted that scouting talent is not a perfect science.
“While Rockie Bactol and Woonkyum Kim were both prospects in which I see promise, we initially passed on Daesong Park in the tryout process only for him to come back and blow us all away with his indomitable spirit,” Franklin said.
“Congratulations to all three for earning their contracts in our first event, as well as on earning their Warrior Bonuses. Our first season was an incredible success and was a terrific experience for myself and the entire ONE Warrior Series team. Looking forward to doing it all again in the coming months.”
In the finale Bactol and Kim both won in the opening round. The former finished Mark Cuizon with a keylock, the latter scored a TKO against Sanjidul Islam and Park prevailed over Eto Kimihiro courtesy of a quickfire TKO.
