Universal Reality Combat Championship puts on their third card of the year after provincial shows in Cebu and Baguio. Three bouts will decide three interim champions and the remainder will be a showdown of fast and furious Filipino action.
URCC starts off their first major card of 2013, Unrivaled, at the SMX Convention Center in Manila, Philippines on April 27, 2013. A ten-fight card is lined up for the event, featuring three interim championship bouts that have been trials in the making. Struggling through adversity, URCC made the fights and circumstances cause hiccups in each. But very game fighters stepped up to the challenge of filling the boots of the champions, and a card full of finishing action is set for the ring Saturday night.
The Bantamweight “Red” Romero has been a URCC staple since 2010. The Yaw-Yan Kampilan product was 4-1 before he took on Ricardo Sapno at 2011’s Black Tie Brawl, where he met with his first TKO loss. Another featherweight battle against Will Chope, the current challenger for that division’s interim championship, left him on the canvas again. Romero set things straight when he decisively KOed Sulpiano Laurio. Originally Jerson Estoro was set to challenge Champion Jessie Rafols, but Estoro had immigration problems and injuries sidelined Rafols, so Romero to dropped back to Bantamweight and Dave Galera stepped up. This will be Galera’s first major event after being undefeated in 4 regional events, and a stiff test against a tactician in Romero, but his strength is in grappling and this could be a case of kryptonite.
Will Chope finally gets his long decried shot at the Featherweight title. Chope took a whopping ten fights in 2012, three of them at URCC. He’s taking the championship challenge seriously and has only fought once this year. The world’s tallest featherweight cemented his challenger status and was set to meet Champion Ricardo Sapno, but personal issues forced Sapno to decline. Andrew Benibe was the only one who stepped up to the plate to take on the behemoth Chope. Benibe’s only losses since his original outing are against Bantamweight champ Rafols and ONE FC Featherweight champ Honorio Banario. He’s show a well-rounded game and like most of the URCC staples, he goes for the finish. Whether or not it will be enough to sideline the lanky lad’s aspirations will be proved in the ring. Both fighters will make an exciting rush for a finish.
The final interim challenge will be in the Lightweight division. Arvin Chan is coming in as an amateur fighter to get a shot at the prize when he faces Froilan Sarenas from Submission Sports, who’s dropping from middleweight for the opportunity.
